POTTY TIME

I know that this is not my usual type of post, but please indulge me for a moment.  I have just successfully potty trained my third and youngest child!  We are now a diaper free household!  As a celebration,  I  am hosting our blog's first giveaway. I am giving away TWO  Potty Time DVD and Music CD Sets from the makers of the amazing Signing Time series!!!

When I heard that the makers of Signing Time and Baby Signing Time had just released Potty Time,  I was so excited!  We have always been fans of Signing Time at our house.  (We actually own almost every single one of their DVDs).  I love the music.  I love exposing my children to sign language.   I love the vocabulary they learned.  I loved that they could communicate their needs with me.  It minimized frustration.  My kids were all signing between 6 and 8 months.  So when Two Little Hands Productions invited me to review Potty Time, I could not wait to get my hands on it.  It was conveniently available at the same time we were potty training.

All of the Signing Time and Baby Signing Time DVDs are meant to be watched with a parent, and Potty Time is no different.  I sat down with my little girl the day ours arrived, and she was mesmerized from the opening song.  The Potty Time DVD features signs for potty terms.  Emmy-nominated Rachel Coleman teaches children through sign and song to listen to their bodies.  The DVD teaches potty routines and how to deal with accidents in a positive way.   There is even a song about celebrating successes!  My daughter loves to sing "Let's Celebrate and clap our hands" every time she goes to the potty.   She is also quite fond of the "Uh-oh Accident" song.   She sings it all the time.  She doesn't save it just for bathroom accidents, though.  No, she sings it whenever there is any kind of accident...  spilling juice, breaking a toy, or "accidentally"  hitting a brother who has taken her toy.   And, thanks to Potty Time,  my two year old can discreetly sign to me that she needs to go potty in places like church and restaurants.  A very helpful skill.

If your kids are already Signing Time fans, they will recognize Hopkins, Leah, and Alex.  They are featured as animated babies in this video (as in the Baby Signing Time DVDs).    And of course, the fabulous Rachel Coleman is there.  My daughter was happy to see familiar faces.  But you don't need to have ever seen a Signing Time DVD to appreciate the Potty Time's wonderful lessons and upbeat and cheerful songs.  Potty Time features children of several different ages,  which helps every child find a "friend" to relate to in the DVD.

Potty Time DVD teaches the signs for  Grow, Love, I Love You (ILY) , Help, Amazing, Body, Eat, Drink, Sleep, Wake Up, Diaper, Potty, Wipe/Clean, Flush, Wash Hands, All Done/Finished, Water, Soap, Stop, Go, Underwear, Accident, Try, Careful, and Celebrate.

The Music CD features all of the songs from the DVD, so you can reinforce the Potty Time message whenever and wherever you want!

I've been told to wait until they're ready and don't try before that. I don't know if this was the most or least helpful because we're still waiting!

I subscribe! :)

The $ store was our friend during potty training - after everything else failed, that's the only thing that worked, thanks to our pediatrician for the tip!

Uggghhh...we're in the middle of potty training and my daughter doesn't want to go near the toilet. I would love to try this DVD. The best advice we had for potty training was to use a reward system...that worked great for our first daughter...not so well for our son...and not at all with #3.

I haven't done potty training yet but its coming up! I like the idea of familiarizing them with the parts of potty training, like my daughter has her toilet seat already but now she just sits on it and reads books. Or just letting them watch how you do it. She mimics so much it just seems natural that she'd want to mimic using the toilet as well. I also read that if you start before they're ready then they'll still be potty trained at the same age they would've been trained at, it'll just take longer to get there.

I pinned on pinterest! Oh and my email is LBhafner@yahoo.com.

The most helpful thing I've been told about potty training is to be patient and not let accidents cause frustrations because they are learning and when we get frustrated, they do to.

I've always heard they aren't ready until they can go all night dry.

I heard that it's easier to have the child face the back fo the toilet so they are not afraid of the flusher.

Great giveaway!
Take them on a trip to the store to pick out their own underwear!:)

The worst advice I ever got was to dump their poopy diapers/underwear out in the toilet to show them that's where the poop goes. It just made my son think that it was ok to poop in his pants and then dump it.

In the middle of potty training right now. So far, a lot of the 'tricks' haven't worked for him. We've done stickers, treats, prizes, etc...and they only worked for a little while. Still searching for that 'self motivating' trick...would love to see if this video could help us :)

I would love to check out this video! We haven't started PT yet, but are hoping to soon. Best advice so far is to wait until he shows interest..so that's what we're doing :)

My daughter is 2 and having a very hard time talking (we are working with a speech therapist) and although I have watched signing time videos with her for a long time, she just barely got excited about them. We also are introducing the potty to her, and hopefully will be working on potty training soon! We haven't received lots of potty training advice, but I did read about infant potty training. Although it is super extreme & sounds crazy, I actually look up to those who have done it! Thanks for all of your hard work, I LOVE your blog & pin posts regularly.

The craziest advice I got...

My Japanese friend told me that kids in Japan respond really well to the following video. (personally, I think it is a little strange)

The strangest advice I got was to tape a pull-up to the toliet and have them go on the pull up, then eventually take away the pull-up to get them okay with sitting and going on the potty.

The best advice I've had was to get this book. It saved my life with my first child. Getting ready to give it a go with child #2 in a few months! http://www.3daypottytraining.com/

My sister, Monica, told me to have our little guy face backwards when sitting so he doesn't spray the bathroom. I think after potty training four boys she's a pro! :) Instead of email, just contact me through her... You know, Hindmarsh family blog. I think you know each other, heehee.....

Kyle, Tiffany, Samantha and Christopher

I'm going to give both since I've got some good ones. The craziest advice I received was to train my son when he was 2 MONTHS old. I didn't follow that advice... We will be starting his training soon though! The best advice I had was for my older daughter: "consistency, consistency, consistency." When we finally did the same thing (reward, timing, etc) over and over, she finally got it. WOOT! My email address is Tiffany.Warren82@att.net. I've subscribed to the blog and posted on pinterest!

The best advice I received was to RELAX and wait until she was showing me signs that she was ready!

The best advice I read was to wait until they are ready. My son would pee in the toilet but it took another three months of me asking do you want to poo in the toilet before he agreed!

Best advice. Don't rush them but once you start keep it up and don't go back to diapers.

Thanks for the giveaway!!! We're in a complete rut trying to potty train our 2 year old. Any help... greatly appreciated!! :-)

SarahJ

The advice I got was to give my daughter lots of salty foods to make her thirsty and juice, etc that she doesn't normally get to drink so that she REALLY needs to potty, and then have her sit on the potty for a few minutes every 20 minutes or so. That way she has lots of opportunity for success. We're still trying to figure out if this is good advice because we're not done with the process yet. I also checked out a bunch of potty books out of the library that she only gets to look at while she's sitting on the potty. All that helped for the first week while she was excited about wearing her big girl panties that she asked for. Then, she lost interest and doesn't want to sit on the potty any more. :(

Best advice was waiting until he was ready. Less frustration for all. And it worked! My kiddo loves signing time and this potty time dvd by them would be awesome to have to use with my second little guy!

Thank you for your comments! I love hearing from the readers of my blog. It makes my day! I have recently had a lot of inappropriate spam that has snuck through, so I am turning on the moderation of comments for a short time, to see if it helps.
